Competition for the 2017 Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge Competition in New Jersey concluded on November 4 in Ewing Township. The competition was open to all girls and boys ages 9 – 14 who participated at local events sponsored by Knights of Columbus councils throughout the state, and who had advanced at district level events and at regional tournaments organized in the five New Jersey Catholic Dioceses (Newark, Paterson, Metuchen, Trenton and Camden). The Soccer Challenge is an annual competition designed for players to demonstrate the most basic of soccer skills — the penalty kick. Each player is allowed shots at the goal from the penalty line (12 yards from the goal). The goal is divided into a series of 5 scoring zones with the upper corners designated as 20 point zones, lower corners designated as 10 point zones and the central region is a 5 point zone.
The Diocese of Metuchen regional finals for local champions from Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties was conducted at the end of October 28 in Annandale. That event was hosted by the Knights of Columbus Immaculate Conception Council 6295 and organized by Knights’ member William Cerwinski of Lebanon Township.
2017 Diocese of Metuchen Regional champions included 9 winners from the local tournament held in High Bridge and one winner from Spotswood. The High Bridge winners were Alexandra McComb, Aedan Dorwart, Kate Johnson, Jason Morales, Maggie Hann, Alex Kinsky, Sophia Desire, Owen McComb and Miranda Corley. Joining them as a regional champion was John Lubin from Spotswood. Sophia Desire also had won the regional competition at the 2016 Diocese of Metuchen event and Miranda Corley had won the New Jersey tournament in 2015.
Diocese of Metuchen champions Miranda Corley and Owen McComb then went on to win 2017 New Jersey State Championships. While Miranda Corley won her second state trophy, Owen McComb achieved the highest score among all contestants at the 2017 state tournament.
