Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III, Chief of Detectives John J. Kuczynski, and Tewksbury Township Police Chief Thomas Holmes announced Detectives from the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau, Arson Task Force and the Tewksbury Township Police Department are investigating the attempted arson to the Tewksbury Township Police Department and other municipal offices. On Monday, May 18, 2015 at approximately 5:38AM, Hunterdon County’s 911 Center received an alert that fire alarms were activated at the Township Police Department located on County Route 517 On-duty police officers arrived shortly thereafter and observed smoke. The Fairmount & Oldwick Fire Departments along with the Tewksbury Rescue Squad was dispatched to Police Department and extinguished the fire. Hunterdon County Detectives along with Tewksbury Police assisted by the Morris County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit are conducting an active investigation into what appears an intentional act to burn the police department which is housed along with other governmental offices. Statement Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III, “The police department could be occupied at any given time by the officers that were on-duty. This appears to be an intentional act that could have had the potential to engulf the entire structure and trap occupants. The prompt response by all involved prevented the loss of a building that provides essential services to the residents of Tewksbury. The potential for death or serious injury was averted. I commend the first responders and the officers for their quick response.
