Arthur Lindsey Wells, of Hellertown, PA, died on September 8th, 2017. Born in 1924 in East Orange, NJ, the son of Mary & Arthur Wells, he lived in Plainfield, Cranford, and Toms River (NJ) before moving to Hellertown in 2013.
He was the owner of Arthur Wells Guild Opticians in Springfield, NJ, retiring in 1988.
He was a U.S. Coast Guard combat veteran during WWII, serving in the southwest Pacific. He was a “plank owner” on the patrol frigate, U.S.S. Belfast (PF-35). While serving, he received 4 battle stars for participating in the liberation of Noemfoor, Sansapor, Morotai, and the Philippine Islands, as well as receiving numerous other campaign medals.
Arthur was a life member of Post 73 American Legion since 1946 and a charter member of Squadron 73, Sons of the American Legion in East Orange, NJ. With continuous membership in the American Legion since 1933, he was one of the oldest members in the United States. Upon the disbanding of Post 73, he transferred to Post 129 in Toms River.
He was also a life member of the VFW Post 8352 in Toms River, the Coast Guard Veterans Association, the Patrol Frigate Reunion Association, the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, and the NJ Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Doris Hansen Wells. Surviving are his son Steven, daughter-in-law Lesley, and 3 grandsons, Brian, Andrew and David, who all live in Lebanon, NJ.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, September 12, 2017 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home, 26 Main Street, Lebanon, NJ. Funeral Service will be Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 10am at the Funeral Home, followed by a luncheon at Round Valley United Methodist Church in Lebanon. Interment will take place at Rosedale Cemetery in Linden, NJ at 2pm.
