Assembly approves Hunterdon Assemblyman Peterson’s bill amending notary law

The General Assembly today approved legislation (A3754) sponsored by Assemblyman Erik Peterson amending notary law to allow attorneys to use a raised seal when validating legal documents.

“This bill is necessary because in other states and countries the raised seal on notarized documents is required, but documents notarized by a New Jersey attorney do not have one,” said Peterson (R-Hunterdon). “This bill provides a simple, common sense solution by allowing attorneys to use a raised seal when notarizing documents.”

People unfamiliar with New Jersey laws are often unaware that New Jersey permits attorneys to witness oaths and affirmations with the same effect as those powers associated with a notary public.
