Congratulations to Special Services teachers Colleen Rossetti and Amy Staats, and the students in their Life Skills class who were selected as recipients of an Innovations in Special Education award presented by the New Jersey School Boards and ASAH.
The criteria for the award was the program’s degree of innovation, how well it meets student needs, its integration into the curriculum, and parent and community involvement. The award was for their Community Senior Luncheon program, which is in its 11th year.
This program is an innovation in Special Education, in that it combines life skills instruction, community-based instruction and community service. The Life Skills class assists in planning and running a monthly luncheon for our local senior citizens. This includes planning, shopping, cooking, calling the Link, calling the senior citizens, set up and luncheon.
The program gives our students the unique opportunity to generalize skills learned in Life Skills class in an authentic setting in our community. The result is a monthly Saturday luncheon which is beneficial and meaningful to all involved, which generalizes life and social skills, connects to the community and provides a community service.
We are extremely proud of the achievements of these outstanding teachers and students!
