Ava M. Winget of Raritan Township NJ, age 81 years, died Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Kindred Hospital in Dover NJ.
Born April 2, 1935, in Clovis NM, Ava was the daughter of the late Charles R. and Mae (Cooper) Vance. She was raised in Eastern New Mexico until she met her husband, R. Dale Winget, in Hereford TX. The newly married couple moved to Lubbock TX, and then to Austin TX, before moving in 1966 to New Jersey with 200 others as part of the Exodus Movement of the Church of Christ.
Ava and Dale were instrumental in the formation and building the Garretson Road Church of Christ in Bridgewater NJ. After moves to Whitehouse Station NJ and Quakertown NJ, the family settled in Flemington, where Ava coached the cheerleading squads of the Flemington Pioneers football and the Flemington Elks wrestling programs.
While a homemaker, she raised her seven children and was an accomplished seamstress; making many costumes for her children in various theatrical productions, drapes and linens in her home, were among her many projects. Ava loved to cook, her famous cinnamon rolls and lemon pies were favorites of her family and many friends. Ava and Dale enjoyed many trips to visit their children throughout the United States, especially to Georgia, North Carolina, and Indiana.
Predeceased by her parents, her sister, Margie Purcell, and her sons, Ricky Dale Winget in 2003 and David Scott Winget in 2004, she is survived by her husband of 63 years, R. Dale Winget, her daughter, Joni Durant of Annandale NJ, her daughter, Melodie Norris of Flowery Branch GA, her son, Stephen Winget of Spring City PA, her son, Dr. James “Kip” Winget of Raleigh NC, her daughter, Cindi Winget of Flemington, her brothers, Bob Vance of Yreka CA, and Gary Vance of San Leandro CA, as well as her seventeen grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral service officiated by Rev. Gary Cook will be held at 11 am, Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at the Garretson Road Church of Christ, 570 Garretson Road, Bridgewater, NJ 08807. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Flemington NJ. Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington NJ.
