Betty L. Muller, age 90 years, of Raritan Township

Life Legacy

Betty L. Muller, age 90 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at home, surrounded by her loving family and under the caring watch of Hunterdon Hospice.

Born on August 16, 1927 in Montclair, NJ, daughter of the late Theodore “Teddy” and Kathryn Bigelow Leigh, Betty was also raised in Montclair. She had lived in Raritan Township for the past thirty years, having formerly lived in Roseland and Verona, NJ as well as Gaithersburg, MD.

Graduating from Montclair High School, Betty went on to become a bookkeeper, first at Essex County Country Club, West Orange, NJ and then spending many years at Drew & Rogers, Fairfield, NJ, where her humor and smile are remembered by all with whom she came into contact.

Feisty, humorous, detailed, practical, flirty and caring are but a few words that describe Betty. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend are several more that this family woman would want mentioned.

Betty’s love story with her late husband, Donald, is one that fairy-tales are made of. The two met aboard the Queen Elizabeth II where it was truly love at first sight.

Writing each other every day for two years while she lived in New Jersey and he in Maryland, this helped form a foundation that would inspire both of their families for generations. They loved each other unconditionally and taught others to love their fellow man and not be judgmental. Donald died in 2011 and he and Betty are surely dancing together in Heaven.

An avid reader, Betty was the “Queen” of QVC shopping and knew the phone operators on a first name basis. She was extremely detailed orientated and insisted everything matched; from colors to design, she had a flare for it all. Her home was always kept meticulous, and her sweet potato casserole and pumpkin pie are two things that many will try to replicate at future family picnics and gatherings; these gatherings that she enjoyed so much over the years.

Were Betty to sum up her life, she would want it known that was a loving wife, a caring mother, devoted grandmother, cherished sister, and simply a good neighbor to all.

In addition to Donald, she was preceded in death by her former husband, Leonard Richard George; a sister, Helene Garoni; and a nephew, Steven Garoni.

Surviving are her children, Edward and wife, Patti Muller of Centreville, VA, Kathleen Lunsford of Gaithersburg, MD, Andrew and Michele George of Raritan Township, NJ and Karen George-Alesi of Browns Mills, NJ; her grandchildren, Danielle, Christina and Andrew George; two sisters, Doris Horn of Manchester, NJ and Barbara and husband, Joseph Fox of Doylestown, PA; Helene’s son and daughter, whom she looked after like her own children when Helene died, Leigh Garoni and Chris Garoni Petrizzo; several extended family members; and many friends.
