Saturday night we had the pleasure to attend a joyous interpretation of Born Yesterday now playing at the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse 88 Route 173 West Hampton, NJ.

If you have never been to the HH Playhouse you are missing out. Every seat in the theater has a brilliant view, the staff is completely accommodating, and the dinner quite frankly was delicious.

For such a small community theater whoever was in charge of the set design was right on point. It allowed the actors to move freely while also letting the audience drift into the imaginary world which was in front of them. The glow of the Capital building through the hotel window was quite effective.

This play was originally written in 1946 by Garson Kanin. It has been made into a film on two occasions, the most recent starred Don Johnson Melanie Griffith and John Goodman in 1993. Running time was approximately two hours with a short ten minute intermission that allowed one to sample exquisite chocolate offerings on the dessert carts.

The premise behind the play is simple, you have a powerful businessman, who is a bigot and a sexist, visiting DC to try and influence politicians. This role is played by John Hickson and we at the Hunterdon County News are thrilled to see him back on stage after a brief respite. Hickson plays the part of the garish brute to perfection, his presence is larger than life and worth the price of admission.

In the female lead, a daft uneducated showgirl who blossoms during the play with the slightest education, is Stacy Wilker. She is just a delight and I can still hear her resonating cackle in my ears days after. She does a fine job at keeping her simple naiveté while growing her characters backbone.  She and John are wonderful together and their charisma makes the evening a smiling success.

The bottom line is that with life spent to oft in front of the electronic box or glued to the cell phone, participating in live theater is a cultural experience that one should grasp onto with great adoration. This is not the nonsense of adolescent offerings of youtube or instagram, these are people with supreme talent showcasing their inner passion for you in an intellectual forum. And for that gift     We say      Bravo –
