Obituary of Charles Schmidt
Charles H. Schmidt, 93, of Lebanon Twp, New Jersey passed away peacefully on Friday, March 3, 2017 at home. Born January 17, 2017 in Queens, New York he was the son of the late Walter and Olga Schmidt. He has lived in Lebanon Township for the past twenty years.
Charles served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 as a gunner on the light cruiser U.S.S. Vicksburg, and was wounded in action during the invasion of Iwo Jima and earned a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, among other medals, and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a past commander of the Disabled American Veterans, and a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Hall of Honor. He has been an avid baseball fan and was a member of the 1986 Philadelphia Phillies Dream Week. Charles enjoyed gardening, landscaping, stone work of all kinds including installing cobblestone walks around his residence.
Surviving Charles is his loving wife of 66 years, Florence (Hunter) Schmidt, son Charles A. of Lebanon Twp and daughter Emily Schmidt-McCabe and her husband Jim of Martinsville, N.J. as well as his devoted grandson, James McCabe of Denver, Colorado.
Friends and relatives may gather on Tuesday March 7, 2017 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at the Martin Funeral Home, 1761 Route 31, Clinton NJ 08809. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday March 8, at 11:00am at the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors will follow at the Spruce Run Cemetery, West Hill Road, Glen Gardner NJ.
