Daria Iwaniuk Yaros, age 68, passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 21, 2016, at her home, in Lebanon, NJ.
Daria was born on September 28, 1947, in Lübeck, Germany, to the late Gregory and Katherine Koocha Iwaniuk, survivors of a Nazi labor camp. The Iwaniuks immigrated to the U.S. in 1950. Her hardworking Ukrainian Catholic parents raised her in northern NJ, where she met her husband of 45 years, Raymond Yaros Jr.
She completed her B.A. in Education at Monmouth College. In 1970, she and Ray married and moved to State College, PA, where she began her teaching career, as Ray pursued his PhD in Mechanical Engineering. They moved to Lebanon, NJ, in 1977.
Daria was a stay-at-home mom to her young daughters, Heather and Jennifer, before returning to teaching in 1984. She was an elementary school teacher at Patrick McGaheran School, where she spent many years shaping the lives of 3rd and 5th grade students.
As a wife, Daria supported Ray’s passion for photography, and as a mother, she encouraged her daughters to pursue their dreams.
Daria was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1996. She experienced 5 remissions, and never gave up or complained. When she lost her hair, and began wearing a wig, she saw it as an opportunity to change her hairstyle or hair color, on a daily basis. She changed her lifestyle to incorporate healthy foods, exercised regularly, and lived life to the fullest.
She retired from teaching in 2009, and spent her time doing what she loved most. As a loving grandmother, Babcia cared for and spoiled her 2 granddaughters, playing with them like she was their age. She was an avid water-volleyball player with the Swim Beauties, participated in book clubs, and shared the tradition of Ukrainian Easter Egg making with others. She enjoyed gardening, Mahjong, eating at new restaurants, and going to the theater in New York. She was the President of the Clinton Township Women’s Club, traveled internationally with friends, and was a caregiver to her mother-in-law, Eve Yaros.
Daria was strong, graceful, talkative, positive, patient, resilient, and gave her whole self to everything she did. She will be sorely missed.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond Yaros Jr., PhD, her two daughters, Heather Yaros-Ramos, PhD and her husband Lucio Ramos of Glen Ridge, NJ and Jennifer Yaros, DPT and her partner Filip Kesler of San Francisco, CA; 2 granddaughters, Natalia and Vivianna Ramos, and one grand-stepson, Marko Kesler.
Viewing hours will be Saturday, January 30, 2016, from 1 PM to 4 PM with funeral service at 3:30PM at Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home, 26 Main Street, Lebanon, NJ 08833. Interment will be private.
