Hunterdon County Vocational School District’s (HCVSD) Adult & Continuing Education’s fall course brochure will be arriving in mailboxes soon, and residents of Hunterdon, Somerville, and Hillsborough can expect to see new course offerings, including vet assistant, massage therapy, guitar classes, and beginner classes for Spanish and French.
The new course offerings expand on the already existing selection of classes designed to meet the needs of individuals looking to explore a new career path, expand an already developed interest, or pick up an entirely new hobby. “We pride ourselves on our diverse course offerings, and understand adults are taking our classes for different reasons. We want to be able to help as many people as possible, and having a strong selection of courses for the public to choose from is the first step in doing so,” said Ms. Christina Shockley, HCVSD’s Adult and Continuing Education Coordinator.
The massage therapy industry has exploded in popularity in recent years. According to the American Massage Therapy Association, massage therapy was a $12.1 billion industry in 2015. It is also estimated that there are 300,000-350,000 massage therapists and massage school students in the United States, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 22% job growth in the field from now until 2024—a much faster than average growth rate. Similar success is also projected for veterinary assistants, a field projected to experience a 9% growth rate through 2024.
HCVSD’s Adult & Continuing Education will also continue to offer the popular cosmetology and aesthetics courses the school has always offered. Last year was another successful year for both programs, as all students that sat for the state exam passed, and the aesthetics students are now eagerly awaiting their practical exams. “We have a strong history with our cosmetology and aesthetics programs, and the instructors are always excited to work with new students and be part of their development throughout the year,” said Ms. Shockley.
