Now that fall is here it is time to schedule some outdoor fun! Mark your calendar for our annual Touch A Truck day on Saturday, November 4th! Saturday, November 4, 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM
Deer Path Park, for all ages! This annual event has been described as “a parade that stands still!” Imagine dump trucks, fire trucks, ambulances, police cars, military jeeps, and lots more, over 30 vehicles all in one place – parked so kids of all ages can get a close-up look! The atmosphere is relaxed, pressure-free and noncommercial. Don’t forget your camera!
We have one exciting canoe day left on Saturday, October 21, Leader’s Choice (of river.) We will leave from the Arboretum, let us know if you prefer a kayak!
November 2, we will be at Miquin Woods spying on the beavers from 5:00-6:00pm. The fee is $3.00 per person. We will be spending an Evening with the Nighttime Sky at Hoffman Park on November 9 from 7:30pm-9:00pm. The fee is $3.00. On November 4th Laura Bush will be leading a Full Moon Hike at Deer Path Park from 6:30-7:30pm, 3:00. Laura will also be hosting several Tot Walks, November’s theme is Leaves on November 16 and 17th at Echo Hill, tot is $3.00, parent is free. In February she will be looking for Animal Tracks on February 22 and 23rd.
If you would rather be inside you can sign up for Recreation Leader, Patrick Eckard’s Knot Tying class on Wednesday, November 8th. It will be held at the Arboretum from 5:00-7:00pm. The fee is $5.00.
Local Illustrator, Lena Shiffman will be teaching Blooming Young Artists, ages 6-10 for $84.00 from 9:00-10:00 am and a Studio Time for Artists in Training class, for ages 11 – 15, for $94.00, from 10:15 – 11:45am. Session B is six Saturdays from November 4 – December 16 at the Arboretum. Students will learn the principles of creating art, while they explore drawing, painting, sculpture, and more. Ms. Lena’s gentle approach encourages and guides students. Visit different media such as pencil, acrylics, watercolor paint, clay, and paper. Students use still lifes, stuffed toys, taxidermied animals, photos, and something brought from home. We might also go outdoors to draw nature! The fundamental principles will be the focus: understanding color, composition, and the proper use of materials.
Lena also teaches adult art classes (15 & up) starting on Thursdays from November 9-December 14,. You can sign up for the morning session from 9:30-12:00, or an afternoon session from 12:30-3:00pm or the evening session from 6:00-9:00pm. There are 5 classes for $100.00. Students may work in charcoal, pastels, oil, acrylic, or watercolor paints. Participants bring their own materials. Join us for some fun in a relaxed atmosphere; you will be amazed at what you can accomplish! All ability levels welcome!
Artist Charles David Viera will also be teaching at the Arboretum, Beginner & Intermediate Drawing & Painting for adults, on six Wednesdays November 8 –December 20th, from 9:30am-12:30pm for $140 (materials not included.)A great place to start to learn the basics of painting and drawing in a educational, supportive and fun environment. Students begin each semester with instruction in the basic rules of drawing, which includes information on contour, value, and composition, and then move on to the study and use of color. Working from a
variety of subject matter, the instructor will offer information on the proper use of materials, composition and color theory via frequent group and individual critiques. Students should only bring black and white drawing materials to the first class.
There will also be an Intermediate to Advanced Drawing & Paining class. Session B is six Fridays, November 10 – December 22 (no class 11/24) 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, Arboretum, for adults, $140 (materials not included. Some sessions may require an additional $5 model fee, collected during the first class) The curriculum of this class is devised to offer students with some previous instruction a structured, but open and supportive environment in which to create. Working from a variety of studio assignments, or independent projects of their own design, each student will be encouraged to explore academic as well as more expressionistic and abstract options via group and individual critiques and illustrated lectures referencing the history of painting. Open to pastel, oil, watercolor and acrylic painters with some experience. Some six week sessions may require an approximate $5 model fee that will be collected the first class. Last but not least a Portrait Drawing & Painting. Session B is six Fridays, November 10 – December 22 (no class 11/24) 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Arboretum, for adults, $98 (materials not included, plus a one-time $20 model fee collected at the first class)
The subtleties of contour, value, and color of the human figure have been learning tools and a challenge for artists over the centuries. In this class, students of all levels will receive basic academic instruction as well as more expressionistic options in dealing with the art of portraiture. Guided by the instructor, students will explore a variety of portrait and figure-painting techniques, including creating a likeness, the use of color in representing flesh tones, and understanding elements of anatomy. Students can work with their favorite medium from figure casts, as well as a variety of portrait models (no nude models). Students should bring a pad, pencils, charcoal and eraser to the first class. The instructor will discuss various color material options for the remaining class dates. An approximate $20 model fee will be collected during the first class.
