Took the drive to Fernwood in the Poconos this past weekend – (Contact 888-FERNWOOD (888-337-6966) – press 3 to reserve a tee time, book a stay and golf package or for information. )

For a look at the Villas and the golf course and we are pleased to report that not only is the course in great shape but it is a very unique course with many tough and interesting holes.

From the get go the gent getting the clubs out of the car was nice, informative and polite. The people in the pro shop were courteous, smiling and gave us a fine update on what was going on with the Ryder Cup. We got off the tee on our time right as scheduled with ease and were on our way.

The first three holes are fairly benign, which is the way it should be. I can’t stand a course that gives you the number one handicap hole on the first hole because let’s face it most of us are working or traveling to the course and usually get there five minutes prior to teeing off and there is no time for warm up. A couple of pretty simple holes allow you to get loose and not put up big numbers at the start which is quite frustrating to most high handicappers. I traveled to fernwood with a female golfer who plays to about a  25 handicap but hits a very nice ball off the tee. I played from the tips she played the up tees which was great. Courses who don’t space the corresponding tee boxes enough tend to frustrate the ladies who get tired of playing 50 to 80 yards behind their playing partners. Fernwood was perfect this way, and most of the time I was playing my second shot from farther behind which made the game move smoothly and kept everyone happy.

And you thought that nine was interesting well hold onto your hat the back is crazy.  Hole ten’s second shot is about five flights up the hill, take two extra clubs. Eleven is a 545 yrd par five that dogs hard left and is a real tester off the tee. Looking for a par three breather, nope, you get  212 yarder with ob all down the left side.  13 plays 395 but the drive plays much longer up the hill and then you get a downhill shot , down meaning about 80 feet down, to a small green with villas behind it.  14 is dead uphill, when the pin is back right good luck. This starts a stretch of holes where the greens are slick and on side hills, shoot at the upper edges and you will still end up on the downside. These are very tough fast greens that need your complete attention or you can four and five putt.

15 is one of the tightest driving holes |I have ever played and it is followed up by another beast uphill 215 yard par three.  If you have been following along after the par three second there are no little gimmees, all the par three play long and difficult. The ladies tees are much more reasonable and fairly easy to hit.

17 is a big dogleg left, you need to pop a pretty good drive to clear the tree on the left and then you have a straight uphill shot to another green that hugs a ridge. 18 is a fine way to end the day, a downhill tee shot give you half a wedge into a large green.

Our overall reaction – both of us – a very playable interesting course that we would go to again anytime. The greens were in great shape as were the fairways and tee boxes, we did not wait all day and the price is right. For a course/resort that is less than an hour away, it gives a couple a nice chance to get out of town without wasting too much time in the car.  Can recommend this course highly.
