Celebrate Shabbat (Shabbes) and the world of Yiddish music, language and culture with the Strauss/Warschauer Duo. “Soulful Yiddish Shabbes” will enhance the spirit and sheer joy of Shabbat with programs geared toward every age group. The program is being sponsored by the Shmuel Frand Holocaust Education Fund for the Center Series of the Flemington Jewish Community Center.
Flemington Jewish Community Center, 5 Sergeantsville Road, Flemington, NJ, presents internationally renowned klezmer musicians Deborah Strauss and Cantor Jeff Warschauer in their first Shabbaton featuring Yiddish themes, and a concert and dance party in the Flemington area. For more than 25 years the Warschauer/Strauss duo have been at the forefront of the klezmer revival and have shared the stage with such performers as Itzhak Perlman and Theodore Bikel.
On Thursday January 25, at 7:00 PM, all musicians and singers from the Flemington, New Jersey area and beyond are invited to join Deborah and Jeff, who are among the leading teachers of this genre of music, in preparation for participating in the “Soulful Yiddish Shabbes” melave malke dance party Saturday night, January 27.
No previous knowledge is required and there is no charge for this part of the event.
Jeff and Deborah will then lead Friday night and Shabbat morning services with a “yidishn tam” (Yiddish flavor), infusing the services with klezmer melodies and Yiddish songs. Throughout Shabbat they will also lead lectures, discussions and singing sessions. Service times are 7:30 on Friday, 9:15 Saturday Morning. Saturday afternoon services will be held at 4:30 followed by the “Seudat Sh’lishit”- the third meal of Shabbat. Saturday evening services will be held at 6:00 followed by Havdalah and a “Maleve Malka” concert and dance party thereafter.
Following Havdalah, a Strauss/Warschauer Duo concert and dance party will cap-off a one-of-a-kind Shabbat and usher in the new week with music.
Audiences around the globe from Great Britain to Germany, from Italy to Brazil, and across North America, have delighted in the music of stellar performers Deborah Strauss and Cantor Jeff Warschauer. Their concerts and educational programs have inspired people of every age, background, and ability. Now, for the first time, these internationally renowned artists bring their unique brand of klezmer to our area for a fun, family-friendly, and inclusive “Soulful Yiddish Shabbes.”
