Had the pleasure of taking a foursome up to Bath PA for a round at Southmore golf club and we are pleased to report that the course is in excellent condition, very playable at a reasonable rate.
From the center of Clinton you take 78 west into PA, take route 33 north for about five miles and then head across to Bathe through Nazareth. Easy trip took about 35 minutes no problems. The course is located north of Bathe about a mile and a half, you pull in to the left.
It all starts with the staff and these guys were engaging, polite and set us right up exactly at our scheduled time which was excellent. Pace of play was perfect and we finished in 3:48 minutes which is wonderful compared to some of the 6 hours rounds in central Jersey.
With all levels of handicaps in the foursome everyone thought the course was good for all abilities. The course played about 6300 yards from the tips making all holes easily reachable for everyone. On a few of the shorter par four holes the longer hitters could get to pin high off the tee with a good swing.
Some of the highlights – Love the par three third, it’s a downhill hole to an elevated green with steep slopes surrounding. There is a waterfall coming off of the right cliff and a large fan to keep the green dry during windy times. This is followed up by a great par five, if you hit the drive to far you get a wicked downhill lie for the second shot and that makes getting the three wood to the green very difficult. Then you have another par three but this one has some teeth. Playing 216 yards up the hill the green is three tiered and if you are not precise your putt is fast and dicey.
The back nine was equally challenging. The par three 16 is a long downhill shot to a heavily bunkered plateau. Err a tiny bit either way and you are making bogie or worse. The finishing hole is just delightful. Bite off as much as you dare on the tee shot. The pond borders the entre right side and if you take out the driver you can bring a lot of h20 into play. If you hug it left about 275 you then have an aggressive wedge to the elevated green.
Overall the course was in fantastic conditions, the greens were rolling about 9 and a half, the fairways were perfectly clipped and the bunkers were all raked out nicely. Had a great time it’s worth the trip.
