|Genevieve Milligan Sliker
Genevieve passed away at her winter home in Port Orange, Florida, in the early morning hours on Thursday, November 17, 2016, after a valiant 6 year battle with pancreatic cancer and her gentle soul was embraced in the loving arms of her parents in Heaven.
Born in Grandin, NJ, on the Milligan Farm on May 14, 1939, she was the daughter of the late J. Bertram and Emma J. Deurling Milligan. She grew up on the dairy farm until marrying her husband of 59 years and 1 day, Bruce J. Sliker, of Lebanon Township.
She was involved in her community for most of her life. As a girl, she was in the Girl Scouts, 4-H, where she won several awards, and was in the choir at Bethlehem United Presbyterian Church in Grandin. After graduating North Hunterdon Regional High School in 1957, she married and resided in Lebanon Township up until her death. She was on the Lebanon Township Committee for 9 years, 2 of which she was Mayor and was a past member of the Hunterdon County Republican committee and was also on the Township’s Recreation Committee. She was a member of Mt. Lebanon Grange in Lebanon Township, the Hunterdon County Pomona Grange, the N.J. State Grange and the National Grange, in which she held many offices and served on various committees. She and her husband Bruce were the NJ State Grange’s Young Couple of the Year in 1964. She was a past member of the P.T.A., a Girl Scout Leader and helped with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She taught Sunday School at Grandin and was also a Deacon at Lower Valley Presbyterian Church. She belonged to the Califon Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She worked in the cafeteria at Woodglen and Valley View schools before becoming a secretary in the library at North Hunterdon Regional High School and then the Administrative Secretary in the Guidance Department until her retirement in 1999. She continued to be a substitute secretary for many years.
Her hobbies included crocheting, needlepoint, embroidery, counted cross stitch and sewing in which she made her wedding gown. She helped sew quilts for the church and crocheted innumerable hats for tots and the needy. She enjoyed making clothes for members of her family as well as making Christmas stockings for them all. She also enjoyed baking, cooking, canning and freezing vegetables from her garden, and loved to plant flowers.
She is survived by her 3 children-Brent Sliker of Polson, MT, Jennifer O’Dell and her husband John “Bucky”, of Vienna, NJ, and Jeanette Sliker of Lebanon Township; 5 grandchildren-Gary Sliker and his wife Harriet of Phillipsburg, NJ, Jami Williamson and her husband Richard of Polson, MT, Timothy Sliker and his wife Tara of Clinton, NJ, Jenevieve O’Dell of Clark, NJ and Jenine O’Dell and her fiancée Andrew Spino of Vienna, NJ; 5 great-grandchildren Derek Sliker, Piper, Hana and Maisie Williamson and Brayden Sliker; a brother Dr. Joseph Milligan and his wife Mary Ann of San Antonio, TX, a sister Phyllis Eichlin and her husband Charles of Frenchtown, 4 brothers and sisters-in-laws-Wayne and Connie Sliker of St. Paris, OH, Glenn and Virginia Sliker of Grafton, NH, Keith and Terri Sliker of Grafton, NH and Trent and Donna Sliker of Asheville, NC; 4 nieces, 8 nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016, at 11:00 AM in the Lower Valley Presbyterian Church, in Califon, NJ. Interment will be private.
