Groundhog Day for offshore Oil Drilling in NJ, Again

Groundhog Day for Oil Drilling, Again

It’s Groundhog Day! Big Oil and their friends in the government keep trying to drill off our coast and we keep on saying no! They have been proposing every few years since 1970 to drill but people keep organizing and fighting them. “It’s Groundhog Day for Big Oil and we are going to stop them again,” Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club released the following statement:

“Donald Trump is selling out our coast to Big Oil from Alaska all the way to Maine while targeting New Jersey.  Our waters will be more susceptible to oil spills and catastrophic accidents. Everyone loves going to the Jersey Shore in the summer time, but our summer vacation would be ruined with an oil spill. Our state will not only be at risk from a spill or explosion, but we will see more climate impacts threatening people and property.

“The possibility of an oil spill or leak would threaten New Jersey’s entire coastal economy. New Jersey is our national treasure and Trump’s harmful proposal will jeopardize our $800 billion coastal real estate industry. New Jersey’s tourism and fishing industry are also at risk. Tourism generates $43 billion annually and supports 500,000 jobs while our fishing industry adds $7.9 billion a year to the state’s economy and creates more than 50,000 jobs.

“It’s Groundhog Day and we’re going to stop them again. The future of the Jersey Shore depends on us stopping them again. The only oil we want on our beaches is sun tan oil. From Anwar (Arctic) to Belmar, we need to make sure our coasts are protected,” said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club.
