Legislation sponsored by Assembly Republican Donna Simon to revamp the governance and administration of the State Museum in Trenton was approved by the General Assembly today. The bill, A-3509, abolishes the existing museum board of trustees and establishes a Division of the State Museum in the Department of State.
“By establishing a new direction, we can have a museum that showcases the rich history of our state and serves more visitors with better exhibits,” said Simon, R – Hunterdon, Somerset, Mercer and Middlesex. “Effective fund-raising and access to grants will allow our museum to compete with better-known institutions in the tri-state region.”
All duties and powers of the current board are transferred to the division. Also, the bill requires the division to employ an executive director with a minimum of five years experience managing an accredited museum.
