Legislation sponsored by Assembly Republicans Jack M. Ciattarelli and Donna M. Simon, designating the third week in March as “Horticultural Therapy Week,” has been signed into law by Gov. Chris Christie.
“Thank you to Governor Christie for signing this resolution into law and to our colleagues who partnered with us,” said Simon, R-Hunterdon, Somerset, Mercer, and Middlesex. “Horticultural Therapy techniques assist individuals with developmental disabilities, gross and fine motor skills impairment, Alzheimer’s, stroke, brain injuries, mental illness, orthopedic conditions and PTSD, just to name a few. It helps with memory, cognitive and language skills, socialization, physical strength, coordination and stress management. This initiative will provide greater awareness and endless opportunities for individuals and groups to positively affect their symptoms while engaging in such a relaxing and enjoyable therapy.”
The law (AJR-13/SJR-12) will increase public awareness about the importance of horticultural therapy in improving the quality of life for all participants.
“As horticulture therapy continues to play a larger and more important role in the community, it is all altogether fitting and perfectly appropriate that we recognize its emergence and therapeutic benefit by designating the third week in March as ‘Horticultural Therapy Week’,” said Ciattarelli, also R-Hunterdon, Somerset, Mercer, Middlesex.
