Hunterdon Chamber Radio (WHCR-DB) the online radio station of the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that host Jim Gano of the show “Takin’ Care of Business” which airs every Thursday at Noon will have special in-studio guests next Thursday, January 11, 2018. Joining Gano for his broadcast will be Michelle Murphy, a Workplace Readiness Teacher at Hunterdon Central High School, Zach Venne and Scott Hindle, two students that participate in the program, Lauren DelRosso one of their job coaches and Jill Stiffler, owner of Jersey Mike’s Subs who is one of the local businesses that participate in the work readiness program.
The Workplace Readiness Program is part of the HCRHS special education’s transition curriculum – specifically geared to the 18-21 year old student population. It combines traditional classroom instruction with community-based assignments to provide authentic yet structured learning experiences.
The goal of the program is to expose the students to Career exploration – to help make career choices and apply knowledge across various settings/environments. Students participate in three, twelve-week volunteer internships throughout the year along with a five-week summer session. Students are typically accompanied by a job coach, on a one-to one or 1:2 basis – this allows the business owners and staff to go about his/her regular routine while the job coaches train and supervise the students.
It is the goal of both Gano and Murphy to get more businesses to participate in this worthwhile program. Gano says, “My company, Crown Trophy of Flemington has been participating in the program for several years and it is a very rewarding experience for the business owner to work with these kids and help them develop the tools they need to obtain fulltime employment after graduation.” For her part Murphy states the most rewarding part of her job is “watching the students grow and develop – seeing them learn the new tasks, and increase their self-confidence.” Gano added, “I can tell you that we face some pretty tight deadlines in my business and if it weren’t for the students in this program helping us, there is a good chance we wouldn’t complete some of our larger orders on time the last few years.”
Businesses that are interested in the program should listen to the broadcast starting at Noon on Thursday, January 11, 2008, by logging onto www.hunterdonchamberradio.com or tuning in WHCR-DB on digital player radios.
