The Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce, the Hunterdon County Clerk’s Office and the Hunterdon County Division of Veteran Services are sponsors of a year-round Veteran’s Discount program.
Last year at the Veteran’s remembrance service held at the Civil War Monument in the County Seat of Flemington, County Clerk Mary Melfi, Chamber President Chris Phelan and Sabrina Barada, Veteran Services Coordinator for Hunterdon County announced the formation of this program. The goal of this program is for a way for our business community to show its appreciation for the service of so many of our Veterans here in Hunterdon County by providing a discount at participating businesses. So far, over 60 businesses have stepped up to offer discounts to our Hunterdon County Veterans. A complete list of participating businesses can be found on the Chamber’s website: www.hunterdonchamber.org
The idea of the program came from our County Clerk Mary Melfi, who also established New Jersey’s first Veteran ID program for Hunterdon County residents. The County Clerk’s office records Honorable Discharges and DD-214’s free of charge. Recording these important papers affords Veterans the security of knowing their discharges are permanently on record within Clerk’s office.
“The Chamber is very proud of our Mary Melfi for being the first County Clerk in the State to offer a Veterans Photo Identification Card,” said Chris Phelan, Chamber President. He went on to say “The service, sacrifice and dedication that our Veterans have made enable the spirit of free enterprise to exist, we owe a debt of gratitude to our Veterans, and this is just one small way we can show our appreciation.”
When a Veteran records their DD-214, the Clerk’s office will offer a County Veteran Identification Card that provides you with the page/book number under which the document is filed. This card can be an easy reference that may be used at a future date to obtain a copy of your discharge papers if a situation arises where they cannot be located quickly. This is the same card that you can use at the businesses offering a discount to Hunterdon County Veterans.
“It is an honor and privilege to partner with the Hunterdon County Chamber and Hunterdon County Division of Veterans Service in coordinating this discount program for our Veterans,” said Mary Melfi, Hunterdon County Clerk. She went on to say, “This program is a small way for businesses to say thank you to Veterans who served their country.”
