The Hunterdon County High School Mock Trial Competition is coming up later this month. This year’s case is a criminal case dealing with the opioid epidemic. The Preliminary Rounds are on Saturday, January 20th at the Hunterdon County Justice Complex. There will be three trials, one at 9:30, one at 12:30 and one at 2:30, all held in Courtroom 5. The finals are Thursday, January 25th at the Historic Courthouse in Flemington at 6:30pm.
The stakes are high for Dana Martin who faces prison for the first degree crime for strict liability drug distribution, resulting in the death of young Zachary Simon. But did Dana sell a deadly batch of fentanyl to longtime friend Zach, who struggled with addiction? To the Simon family Zach was not just another statistic in the opioid epidemic, but a beloved son whose life ended too soon.
Students will tackle this timely issue in the Vincent J. Apruzzese High School Mock Trial Competition. The 2017-2018 Mock Trial Workbook, which contains the cases, rules and procedures, will be posted in early October.
