Hunterdon County Rotary Clubs Raise Hunger Awareness at the Central Jersey Jazz Festival

Hunterdon County Rotary Clubs; Clinton Sunrise, North Hunterdon and Horizon E-Club are using this year’s Central Jersey Jazz Festival as a means to raise awareness about the on going hunger problem in our county.
“The perception that all residents in Hunterdon are well off is a fallacy”, said Clinton Sunrise Rotarian, Megan Jones-Holt. “ Hunterdon is the wealthiest county in New Jersey, as well as one of the top wealthiest in the country, and this skews the numbers dramatically as the need for this cause is tremendous. All six Hunterdon Rotary clubs have been addressing hunger in Hunterdon for many years and have raised funds through the annual winter Soup Cook Off. We wanted to shed more light on the issue and decided to use our jazz festival as another opportunity to do so.”
The most sought after items are non-perishable foods such as canned soup, fruit and vegetables. Bear in mind the event is on the heels of the fall and winter holidays so items like
coffee, sugar, and spices for baking are welcomed. Paper goods such as paper towels, toilet paper, personal care items, cleaning supplies and grocery store gift cards are needed as well.
In addition to collecting the above for the area food pantries, the clubs will be asking for a five dollar donation per car and will be conducting a 50/50 raffle with the drawing before the headliner’s performance at 9PM. You must be present to win. These funds will go to the food drive effort, as well as support other community projects through out the year. Rotary has a tradition of supporting local high school students with scholarships to college, youth leadership training, mentoring programs, and dictionaries for third graders. Rotary reaches out to families in need with financial and hands on support during hardships, organize outreaches by collecting coats, books, funds for fire victims. Each club acts independently and uses funds raised for specific targeted projects such as the beautification pocket parks at the Clinton Red Mill, Demott Pond, Alley’s Way and the Fitness Trail at Pond Ridge in the Town of Clinton.
Long running visible events like the Clinton Fishing Derby, the Great Rubber Ducky Race, Sprintin Clinton and the Hunterdon Triathlon are all produced by Rotary Clubs in Hunterdon and   now added to the list is this year’s Central Jersey Jazz Festival.
“We saw the value of the continuation of this event for our county and Rotary and made the decision to undertake it,” according to North Hunterdon Rotarian Robert Junge. “This is the third year Hunterdon will be a part of the annual Central Jersey Jazz Festival and like our other events, it will be a long term partnership.”
The tri-county event held in conjunction with New Brunswick and Somerville is on September 16-18. The Open Air event attracts music and art lovers, as well as foodies from all over the state and near by metropolitan areas.
An all star line up will once again be playing a diverse mix of musical ensembles at Deer Path Park.  Guitarist Charlie Apicella and the Iron City kick the event off at 6PM. Vocalist and Banjo Player, Cynthia Sayer takes the stage at 7PM, followed by international recording blues Artist Alexis P Suter and her band at 8PM. Headlining is Trumpeter Freddie Hendrix at 9PM.
Deer Path park provides an expansive area for lawn seating, on sight parking and access to a variety of food provided by ten different food trucks. Beverages will be provided by Old York and Unionville vineyards and Hunterdon’s first microbrewery, The Ship Inn.
Tethered balloon rides will be available courtesy of our sponsor, Unity Bank. Although the event is free to attend, the food and beverage is not, so please do bring lots of cash to support our local businesses and the Rotary clubs projects.
This event is produced 100% by sponsorships and we could not thank the local business and the county organizations enough who contribute.  Hunterdon County Cultural & Heritage Commission, Hunterdon County Parks & Recreation, Jack Cust’s Diamond Nation and Health Quest, Flemington Car & Truck, Holiday Inn of Clinton, JCP&L, Rotary District 7510, Hyundai of Flemington, Northfield Bank and Stop n Shop.  Barnbus/ RWJ Hospital is once again the tri- county’s major contributor.
The event kicks off rain or shine on Friday at Deer Path park 6-10pm.  It runs Saturday in New Brunswick and Sunday in Somerville.  For more information and updates like the Central Jersey Jazz Festival on face book or go to www.centraljerseyjazzfestival.com.
