HUNTERDON Safe Communities Coalition Wants Teens to Tell Us “How do you stay alcohol and drug free?” Above the Influence Design Contest

Every teen’s life is filled with pressure, some good, some bad.  But how do teens stand up to these negative pressures, or influences? The more aware a teen is of the influences around them, the better prepared they will be to face them, including the pressure to use drugs and alcohol.

Above the Influence is a national program under the non-profit Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. The campaign is inspired by how teens deal with the influences that shape their decisions, and promotes safe, healthy, drug and alcohol free lifestyles.

“The Safe Communities Coalition of Hunterdon County also believes in the positive norms of our teens,” said Peggy Dowd, Coalition Coordinator and Chair of the Hunterdon County Youth Coalition.  “We know that two-thirds of teens do not drink or do drugs.  We want to promote how so many youth stay above the influence of substance abuse.”

The Coalition, which is managed by Hunterdon Prevention Resources (HPR), is asking high school students in Hunterdon County to participate in a contest by designing a logo:  How to Stay Above the Influence!  We want to know:

  • What keeps you from getting involved in drugs or alcohol?
  • What positive influences in your life keep you alcohol and drug free?

The design must contain the following three components:

  1. Safe Communities Coalition Logo
  2. Above the Influence symbol
  3. This phrase:  “I pledge to make healthy and safe choices”.

The Coalition logo and Above the Influence symbol can be found on the Coalition website at Artwork can be submitted via email in JPEG format, as a PowerPoint slide, or as a Word document, to Peggy Dowd at  All artwork must be submitted by Friday, November 20, 2015.

The winner of the contest will receive a $100 gift card.  Runner-up prizes will also be awarded.
