Iole M. Matthews, age 86, of Phillipsburg, NJ passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice Center in Newton, NJ.
She was born on April 15, 1930 in Milwaukee, WI. She resided in Phillipsburg, NJ for the past 5 years, moving from Bethlehem Twp., NJ where she lived since 1974.
She was the daughter of the late Robert and Zaira Mazzoni.
Her husband, Robert Christopher Matthews, passed away in 1996.
Iole worked for New York Life in Cokesbury, NJ as a Bookkeeper for many years and also with A.M. Best in Oldwick, NJ.
Iole was very involved with her community. She was an active member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Califon, NJ. She was past Treasurer of her Senior Group in Bethlehem Twp., NJ, past President of a Bereavement Group in Hunterdon County, past Treasurer of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, past Officer of her Senior Group in Union Twp. and she was on the Board of Elections for 30 years in Bethlehem Twp. Years ago, she volunteered for the American Cancer Society and she also volunteered at the Hunterdon Medical Center’s ‘Grandma for a day’ program. Iole was the recipient of Bethlehem Twp.’s ‘Volunteer of the Year’ Award.
Iole enjoyed going to the beach, going on day trips, seeing shows, scratch-off lottery tickets and going to casinos. She also enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors include 2 sons; Scott C. Matthews and his wife Therese M. of Alexandria Twp., NJ and Douglas R. Matthews and his wife Emily E. of Pittstown, NJ. 2 grandchildren; Kristen Leigh Matthews of Morristown, NJ and Ryan Christopher Matthews of Alexandria Twp., NJ.
Predeceased in addition to her husband included 1 brother; Louis Mazzoni, who passed away in 1962.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, January 31, 2017 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm and Wednesday, February 1, 2017 from 8am – 9am at Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home, 26 Main Street, Lebanon, NJ. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 10am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Califon, NJ. Interment will be private.
