James J. Flynn
Surrounded by family, Jim (a/k/a Ben), age 90, of Lebanon Borough, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2017 at Rolling Hills Care Center in Lebanon Borough, NJ.
Born on May 1, 1927 in Jersey City, NJ, he moved from Belleville, NJ (where he resided from 1973) to Vero Beach, FL in 2003.
Jim was the son of the late James J. Sr. and Ellen Verdon Flynn.
His wife, Frances (nee) Pflugi, passed away in 1999 after they celebrated 42+ years of marriage.
Jim served as a World War II veteran in the US Navy in the rank of Seaman First Class from 1944 to 1946. As a USS Vermilion crew member, he earned and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Medal, American Theatre Medal and Victory Medal.
He achieved a distinguished 31-year career as a Jersey City Police Officer, where he dedicated himself from 1956 to 1988.
Jim was a devoted and committed husband, father, relative, and companion. He loved to perform duets with Franny, his wife, during her life; entertain anyone who asked “or didn’t ask” with his gifted voice, imitating some of his favorite musical artists and comedians—Louie Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Red Skelton. No matter where he lived, friends would demand he sing “Danny Boy” which he never forgot even up to his very last days. Laughing, joking and hearing his boys perform an endless imitation of quotes from Rodney Dangerfield were high favorites of his. Family was very central to Jim’s values. He always loved being around them, his parents, siblings, children, grand kids, and great grand kids, and will always be remembered for his love of his kin. Jim was an active member of Vero Beach Alliance Church in Florida as well as Riverside Community Church in Nutley, NJ during the years he resided there.
