The brass sounds of old New Orleans will blend harmoniously with contemporary jazz when the Jeff Newell New-Trad Octet performs Thursday, May 19, at noon and 7 p.m., at The Theatre at Raritan Valley Community College, Branchburg. The octet’s performances are the final selection in this year’s popular Club28 series. The Jeff Newell New-Trad Octet combines the instruments and elements of a traditional New Orleans brass band with those of a modern jazz group. The ensemble explores the early sources of our nation’s musical heritage – including church music, band music and blues – and combines those influences in ways that excite modern audiences. Formed in 1994, the New-Trad has brought its sound to clubs, theatres, schools, festivals and churches, thrilling audiences from the Atlantic to the Rockies. AllAboutJazz-New York has written of the group: “With smart, inventive arranging…Newell [throws] his octet into handsprings through a multitude of musical territories.” Tickets cost $10 for the noon performance and $25 for the 7 p.m. show. All seating is general admission. The noon performance is set in on-stage theatre-style seating and is approximately one hour in length. Audience members are invited to pre-order a box lunch for $5 and dine at the Theatre before the noon show. The evening show, set in a relaxed, on-stage cabaret setting, includes refreshments and is approximately two hours long.
