John R. Hansen Jr
John R. Hansen, Jr., 67, of Flemington, New Jersey left this life while on a final walk under the trees. A graduate of Bernards High School, John was a poet, musician and composer, and began a band in the 1960’s which performed throughout the north New Jersey area.
John attended college in Kentucky, then relocated to Colorado, where he developed an abiding love for the mountains of the west. John resided for a few years in New England, then returned to his native New Jersey, where he remained the rest of his life. While in Kentucky, John had become proficient on the twelve-string guitar. John used the twelve-string guitar to compose music even as his eyesight failed.
Many who knew John enjoyed his wry sense of humor. John could discuss any number of subjects because he was such a wide reader. After losing his vision, John devoured audio books and was entranced with the adventures of early twentieth century explorers such as Shackleton. John was reinvigorated by walks in the woods of New Jersey even as he dreamed of returning to the mountains of Colorado.
He is survived by his sisters, Elaine R. Mulhern of Annandale, New Jersey and Lorraine L. Hansen of Rollinsford, New Hampshire, his half-sister, Barbara Hansen of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, his nieces, grandniece and grandnephews.
John was predeceased by his mother, Helen D. Hansen, of Flemington, New Jersey, as well as his father and stepmother, John R. Hansen and Dorothy Wells Hansen, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
The family is very appreciative of all the support John received from the Flemington community. A mass will be held at St. Magdalen de Pazzi Roman Catholic Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, New Jersey on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 9:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Flemington-Raritan First Aid and Rescue Squad, which has been so very helpful, or to the National Forest Foundation.
