Letter – from BOE candidate Blutfield

To the editor:

My name is Lori Blutfield, and I’m running for re-election to the Readington Township seat on the Hunterdon Central Board of Education on November 8.  I’m asking for your vote so I can continue to be your voice in helping shape Hunterdon Central’s future. My goal remains to help Hunterdon Central once again become a Blue Ribbon School and a school that our students, teachers, and community can be proud of.  Here’s why you should vote for me:

I have the experience and proven track record

For the past 3 years, I have worked tirelessly as a Hunterdon Central board member representing Readington Township to try to impact change that would be in the best interests of students while being fiscally responsible to taxpayers.  During my 3 years, I have not only learned a lot about the inner workings of the school board and administration, but I have also become extremely knowledgeable about the issues currently facing the school district.

I keep my promises

As promised 3 years ago, I have listened to input from community members, have fought for transparency from the Board and administration, have brought your issues to the attention of the administration, and have not been afraid to vote against the tide. In short, I have upheld my promise of being accountable to my stakeholders. My votes have always been based on community input, sound analyses, and facts, rather than just blindly implementing the superintendent’s agenda.  I have also urged my colleagues on the Board to find a compromise, so we can settle the teachers’ contract, improve the culture and morale at the school, and retain good staff.

I have the right background

I have an extensive financial and analytical background.  Academically, I earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Lafayette College, and an M.B.A. in Finance from NYU.  I also previously managed billions of dollars for the AT&T and Johnson & Johnson Pension and Savings Plans.  Having a strong analytical background is key to being able to apply a high degree of rigor to critical educational and financial decisions.

I have a vested interest and an important perspective

I have lived in Readington Township for over 23 years.  I have 3 sons, a 2013 Central graduate, a 2016 Central graduate, and a current sophomore at the school.  This means I have seen the school first hand go through some significant changes (like with the curriculum).  I know what the school looked like 7 years ago when my eldest son began there, and most importantly, I am intimately aware of what is currently going on at the school because I have a child who is still there.  A current parent’s perspective is a huge asset for a board member.

I can fully represent my constituents on all decisions

This next year will be a crucial time for Central as we search for a new superintendent to lead our school into the future.  Choosing a superintendent is the most important decision a school board can make, as the right superintendent is absolutely critical to delivering a quality, cost effective education for our kids and to retaining good teachers.  The fact that my opponent’s wife works at Hunterdon Central means he would legally have to recuse himself on many important issues and personnel matters.  This includes such key and immediate issues as the teachers’ contract and the entire selection process for our permanent superintendent.  I have no such conflicts, and therefore, I would be able to fully represent my constituents in Readington in this crucial decision and all other decisions.

Let’s continue to work together to help shape a bright future for Hunterdon Central.  Please vote for me, Lori Blutfield, on November 8.  For more information about me, you can visit my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/blutfieldforboe.
