LETTER Muñoz bill banning underage marriages approved by Assembly

Legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Nancy F. Muñoz barring individuals under the age of 18 from marrying or entering into a civil union received General Assembly approval today.

“New Jersey’s children are one step closer to no longer being victims of forced or arranged marriages. I am extremely happy for Fraidy Reiss, who advocated for this legislation; she has dedicated herself to its passage,” said Muñoz (R-Union). “I want to thank my colleagues in the Assembly for their support of this needed measure.”

State law permits anyone under the age of 18 to marry with a parent’s or guardian’s consent. A Superior Court judge must also approve if the person is under 16 years of age.

Muñoz’ bill (A-3091) prohibits the issuance of marriage or civil union licenses to all persons under the age of 18, regardless of parental or judicial consent.
