Thanks to an impressive voter turn-out in this November election, Republican’s Liz Duffy and Ben Smith won two Readington Township Committee seats against independent candidate Scott Scammell by a margin of greater than two to one. This secures the safety against airport expansion for one more year.
Mr. Scammell and his campaign manager, Committeeman John Broten, made an attempt to provide Solberg Aviation with the three seat majority on the Readington Township Committee. This would have removed all obstacles to airport expansion. While Liz Duffy and Ben Smith used their energy to explain the value they would offer to protect our home values and quality of life, Mr. Scammell aggressively politicked against someone who is no longer on the Township Committee, while promoting airport expansion for his long-time friend, Thor Solberg. Mr. Scammell offered no plans for how he would govern the town. Although many elections are marred with political bantering, this year’s election was particularly disturbing.
During this campaign season, Readington Township’s code enforcement officer sent two letters to each candidate reminding them of the laws governing campaign signage. Mr. Scammell, under the advisement of his campaign manager egregiously violated the law and placed five times the legal limit of campaign signs on a trailer that was parked throughout the town. Mr. Scammell was warned repeatedly that he was in violation of the law. He refused to follow the law and was ultimately issued a citation for prohibited signage and had his signs confiscated.
The pro-airport expansion enthusiasts are incorrigible and desperate to win the three seat majority on the Township Committee so a runway of over a mile long can be built to accommodate jet traffic in Readington Township. Although the candidates won who we can trust to protect our best interests andwill work to reach a resolution with the airport owners, our community needs to remain vigilant and keep a watchful eye on those who do not have the township’s best interest at heart.
