LETTER resolution honors first New Jersey-born NASCAR champion

Assemblyman Ron Dancer introduced a resolution (AJR43) heralding Martin Truex Jr. for winning the NASCAR Cup Series championship. Truex is the first New Jersey native to earn the coveted cup.

“In a sport thoroughly dominated by heavy-footed good ol’ boys who honed their skills on the oval tracks of the deep south, this Jersey driver stands alone as NASCAR’s champion,” said Dancer (R-Ocean). “Martin demonstrated unflinching tenacity and perseverance as he overcame personal and professional challenges to win the top prize in auto racing. The Legislature’s recognition of his accomplishments is well-deserved”.

Truex clinched the 2017 cup, beating 2015 champion Kyle Bush in a dramatic finish in Homestead, Fla. on Nov. 19.

“Growing up in our state, Martin’s path to NASCAR stardom included many local venues, including victories at New Egypt Speedway  in my hometown, and Wall Stadium Speedway,” said Dancer, adding that Truex capped off his dominant season when he and his girlfriend Shelly Pollex received the prestigious Myers Brothers Award for their charitable work fighting pediatric and ovarian cancer. Pollex is battling a recurrence of ovarian cancer.
