In a carbon copy of last year’s election when Broten and Tropello ran as newcomers for Township Committee seats (and won), CFR has popped up again and asserted with impunity that newcomers Larry Lelah and Deb Lyons are also “pro-airport candidates” seeking to take over the township in order to facilitate expansion of Solberg Airport. They have baldly asserted that Lelah and Lyons, and their supporters, are pro-airport, while only long-time incumbents are “pro-Readington”. The commentary that comes to mind when such utter lies are proliferated cannot be printed.
Broten, Tropello, Lelah and Lyons have all lived in Readington a long time – between 10 and 30 years each. Not once in all of those combined years, however, has any single one of these names been mentioned or otherwise heard from during the decades-long Solberg Airport saga. Are Readington residents really foolish enough to believe that all of a sudden, after lying in wait for decade(s), each of these long-time residents suddenly chose to run for township committee for the purpose of facilitating airport expansion? What do any of them have to gain from it? It is simply absurd and constitutes outright lies intended to mislead the public.
Not only do these lies seek to elicit votes by wrongly instilling fear in residents, but they also serve to deflect from the true state of affairs. Readington will likely lose its court case BECAUSE the facts support a finding that its true purpose for condemning the airport was to prevent its expansion. The Appellate Court in this very case in 2009 ruled that condemnation for the purpose of preventing expansion is NOT permissible, and it certainly will not reverse its own ruling on any subsequent appeal. Readington Township incumbents in both the last election and this one know very well that they cannot directly campaign on a “stop the jetport” platform, as to do so would undermine sworn statements to the court that preventing expansion is not Readington’s true purpose. They, however, need someone to incite the airport scare and spread misinformation to secure votes, which is the very reason we see CFR stepping in to do it for them.
The dubious veracity of CFR’s statements is also woefully obvious from the lack of documentation. They make assertions from selected language pulled out of a 100+ page legal brief, but refuse to post the legal briefs themselves or the 2009 Appellate Decision so that residents can verify the accuracy of their statements. For anyone interested, these legal documents can be found at www.readingtonbetweenthelines.org.
The harsh reality is that if the Solbergs are free to expand their airport, it is because our long entrenched incumbents chose to push the case to trial despite knowing at least since 2009 that the case is not legally sound. Neither the incumbents nor CFR can change that reality by simply denying it or attempting to deflect blame.
