On Thursday, November 5, at approximately 2:10 am, Patrolman Michael Akers responded to Route 31 North in the area of Route 626 for a report of a motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival, Ptl. Akers learned that a 2005 Nissan sedan operated by Mark Velez, age 22, of Glen Gardner, was traveling Route 31 North when Mr. Velez lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the center median. Ptl. Akers detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on Mr. Velez’s breath and soon determined that he was intoxicated. Mr. Velez was therefore arrested and transported to police headquarters where he refused to provide samples of his breath to determine the content of alcohol in his blood. Ptl. Akers charged Mr. Velez with Driving While Intoxicated, Refusal to Submit to a Breath Test, and Failure to Maintain Lane. He was released to the custody of a responsible adult and his vehicle was towed and impounded.
