Readington Free Tree Seedling Giveaway April 18 and 25 for Planting at Home

Organized by Readington Open Space Advisory Board with trees obtained from the N.J. Tree Recovery Program to help communities replace trees lost from Superstorm Sandy . Many varieties of native deciduous and conifer trees are available free to residents. The trees are two to four feet high bare root seedlings.  Up to five trees per family. Come to the Municipal Building Saturday, April 18, 10:00 – 1:00 or to Dobozynski Farm Park April 18 or 25, 10:00 –1:00 to get your seedlings. Varieties and number of trees available to each resident may be restricted due to availability.

Through the NJ Tree Recovery Campaign, we have secured over 1,000 seedlings of various native species to distribute free to help our community recover. Replant those missing trees you lost in recent storms and beautify your yard! The seedlings:  are bare root and range in size from one to four feet in length, depending on species  are from over twenty different of deciduous and conifer native species  need to be planted promptly, or must be stored in a cool, damp location prior to planting if not planted immediately  will need to be protected from deer predation with wire cages or plant tubes. Some protective materials will be available for purchase at the giveaway sites, if desired.  Will need to be kept watered through the first year or two Planting Instructions will be available when you pick up your trees and on the Township website. Used “2 Gallon” Black Plastic Flower Pots (The type shrubs are sold in at home centers, measuring about 8” or 9” across ) for the April 25 Community Planting day at Dobozynski Farm Park. If you have any lying around, drop them off when you pick up your trees. On April 25 bring the family, the scout troop your friends and spend a little while in the morning to help plant seedlings while getting your trees for home! Look for announcement on the twp. website.
