READINGTON Township Hike to the Summit of Cushetunk Mountain Sunday, July 19 from Pickell Park

READINGTON TOWNSHIP OPEN SPACE Hike Cushetunk Mountain Climb From Pickell Park A Guided Walk with Members of the Readington Township Open Space Committee Sunday, July 19, 2015 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM Meeting Time: 1:00 PM Meeting Location: Pickell Park, far end of lot, at the Information Kiosk 275 Mountain Rd. (off Rt. 523, behind Municipal Bldg) Whitehouse Station NJ 08889 Note: We will NOT be meeting at the Municipal Building Hike to the Top of the Mountain! ‘Mountain of Hogs’ to the Lenape because of the wild pigs that foraged there, a refuge of wolves harassing settlers in colonial times, and the site of a long gone aeronautical beacon guiding the first cross-country Air Mail planes during the infant days of powered flight, Cushetunk Mountain today overlooks Round Valley Reservoir and is the nesting site for bald eagles. Our hike will take us to the summit of the mountain and along a portion of the ridge. After about a mile of gradual elevation changes, the trail requires a strenuous 350 foot climb up the steep mountain side through mature woodland. The rewards, however, are terrific views from the top, impressive woods and possible bald eagle sightings. The hike time will be approximately two hours. There are maps at the Recreational Trails tab at . Please RSVP to: John Klotz, Open Space Advisory Board, at, or by phone at (908) 782-6452.
