Robert “Bob” Joseph Smith, 90, of Holland Township

Robert Smith

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, NJ – Robert “Bob” Joseph Smith, 90, of Holland Township, NJ, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 11, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his loving family which was his wish.

Bob was born in 1926 and raised on the well known Smith family farm on Ryders Lane in East Brunswick, NJ. As a boy he worked the farm plowing with his team of horses and was very proud of his model “T”. Bob was a graduate of South River HS and received an agricultural degree from Rutgers University. Bob had a lifelong career with PSE&G as an engineer developing a new department in power line maintenance. Bob and his wife Veronica (Pat) Wolpert of New Brunswick NJ married in 1950 and together raised a family of five children in Milltown, NJ. He was a communicant of Our Lady Lourdes Church in Milltown.

Bob is remembered as a wonderful husband, great father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Flying was his hobby and passion. Over a lifetime he built a squadron of beautiful radio control planes. Bob obtained his private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying his Cessna 152. His family recalls many camping vacations and air shows. Bob and Pat enjoyed traveling in their retirement years and spending time with their children and grandchildren. In 2001, at the age of 75, he won a hand plowing completion with a team of Belgian workhorses. His wealth of knowledge and his ability to tackle projects was inspirational to his family and they are forever grateful for his concern, love and support. His sons fondly remember fishing trips with their dad, his helping hand with car and motorcycle repairs and sunken boat retrievals. Joanne recalls going to fly planes with him knowing he would stop to see horses (her love) as a child along the way. (Luckily for dad, he passes on unaware of many other follies created by his kids!)
Bob was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He was a proud member of the Flying Farmers and The Quiet Birdman (QB’s) flying clubs. He enjoyed meeting his flying buddies for breakfast.
Bob sends his love to family and friends and signs off – Cessna 152 N68754- clear skies ahead!

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Veronica “Pat”, his three sons Tom Smith and his wife Maryalice of Saranac Lake, NY, Jim Smith and his wife Kerry O’Rourke of Milltown NJ, and Paul Smith of San Clemente, CA., and his two daughters Joanne Bodnar and her husband Stan of Whitehouse Station, NJ, and Barbara Fish and her husband Tim of Greenfield, MA. Bob leaves nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a step sister Eileen Nolan and her husband Greg of Beltsville, MD. Bob was predeceased by his sister Florence.
