The Small Biz Networking Meetup is holding a special small business owner networking/business expo event at Hunterdon Hills Playhouse, on Monday, April 18th, from 12noon-3pm in the Atrium of the lovely playhouse. This event promises to be fun, very informative to our members and outside guests, and a great networking opportunity as well. There will be display tables featuring some of our members and their services. Also, Steve will bring a few cars to display. A delicious lunch will be provided by the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse for $20.00 per person (you pay at the door), and cash bar. Steve Kalafer entered the automotive industry in 1973 as Business Manager for Coleman Oldsmobile located in Trenton, New Jersey. Three years later he acquired own dealership, Ditschman Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, then located in Frenchtown, NJ. In 1979, Steve moved that dealership to its present location in Flemington, NJ, where it remains, and grew his automotive business.
Currently Flemington Car & Truck Country has showrooms and service centers in 8 locations for 18 franchises. The dealerships sell and service the over 20 brands of cars.
Kalafer’s leadership and the dedication and personal commitment of its employees and associates, has brought Flemington Car and Truck Country and Clinton Honda national recognition at the highest level of the automotive industry for superior customer service and community involvement. Honors include: Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award National Finalist and New Jersey Automotive Dealer of the Year and the People Magazine Award for Outstanding Service. The dealerships have also been awarded the Automotive News/Good Housekeeping Dealership Service Excellence Award.
Steve has been deeply involved in Hunterdon County and New Jersey civic undertakings. He has founded several boards and served as an appointee to Governor Christine Todd Whitman’s Economic Master Plan Commission for New Jersey and chaired the Transportation subcommittee and served on the Department of Treasury’s transition team.
He is a board member of the New Jersey Manufacturer’s Insurance Company, The Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation,Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Chairman of the Somerset Medical Center Foundation Board, Chairman of the New Jersey Public Research Organization, Member of the NJIT Board of Overseers, and serves as Treasurer of the Actors Fund of America. He was awarded the Actors Fund of America Medal of Honor in April 2013.
Steve Kalafer’s dedication and personal commitment to his community has been recognized in many ways. He has been presented with several Hunterdon County community awards including: the Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen Award, The Entrepreneur of the Year Award and the Golden Award presented by the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce, the Citizen of the Year Award by the Flemington Elks and the Hunterdon County YMCA Man of the Year Award. He also has been awarded the Anti-Defamation League’s prestigious Torch of Liberty Award for his significant contributions to the social, economic and cultural life of his community, named the Ernst and Young Master Entrepreneur of the Year in New Jersey, honored by the Women’s Crisis Services of Hunterdon County for his support, contributions and compassion toward the victims of domestic violence and assault and received the Spirit of Jane Rodney Award from the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Steve’s first love is baseball. He is the Chairman of the 6 time Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Champions, the Somerset Patriots. Home for the Patriots is TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ. The team won the Atlantic League Championship title in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, and 2015, becoming the first team in Atlantic League history to win 6 championship titles!
Steve also produced many documentaries and entertainment projects through his company, New Jersey Pictures. In 1998 his Flemington Pictures production of MORE, an animated short film, won the Jury Prize at The Sundance Film Festival® and was nominated for an Academy Award®. In 1999, Steve produced the feature film DROPPING OUT, an official Sundance Film Festival® selection. Along with his producing partner Peter LeDonne, he produced several award-winning documentaries i.e. Curtain Call.
Steve, 66 and his wife of 44 years, Suzanne reside in Gladstone, New Jersey. They have two sons, Jonathan and Joshua and five grandsons.
