Summer Dance Workshop to be Presented at RVCC

The Visual and Performing Arts Department at Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) in Branchburg will host a Summer Dance Workshop in August for students ages 15 and older. Dance students of all levels are welcome to participate. The five-day workshop, set for August 10-14, features a series of technique, composition and repertory classes taught by Master Teachers Alberto del Saz, Loretta Fois and Sabatino Verlezza. The program culminates in a performance on Friday, August 14, at 7 p.m. The event, which is open to the public, will be held in the Welpe Theatre at the College’s Branchburg Campus. The workshop includes a daily technique class in Modern Dance from 10-11:30 a.m., a lunch break, and Composition and Repertory classes from noon-3 p.m. The fee for the week is $250. Dancers also may register for the morning technique sessions only at a cost of $100. Alberto del Saz is the co-director of the Nikolais/Louis Foundation for Dance and assistant to Murray Louis. He represented the United States State Department on a tour of India, appeared at the Paris Opera Garnier in a “Homage to Alwin Nikolais” and at the Next Wave Festival with Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane Dance Company. He currently teaches at Marymount Manhattan College. Sabatino Verlezza danced with the May O’Donnell Dance Company and worked with Joyce Trisler, Sophie Maslow, Glenn–Lund Dance, Dances/Janet Soares, Larkspur Dance Theater and Norman Walker. Verlezza is the recipient of the Spelman College National Choreographers Award, Northern Ohio Live Inclusion Award and the Governor’s Award in Ohio. He currently teaches at Marymount Manhattan College, Hunter College and RVCC. Director of Dance at RVCC, Loretta Fois was a teaching artist for NJ Department of Education and an Artist in Residence for Paper Mill Playhouse. In 2011 she received a Choreography Fellowship from the NJ State Council on the Arts. Fois has worked with such artists as Claire Porter, Andrew Jannetti, Pat Graney and Stephen Koplowitz. She served on the faculty at Mason Gross School of the Arts, City University of New York, Ohio State University, Union County College, Middlesex County’s School of Performing Arts and New Jersey School of Ballet. She currently serves on the Executive Board of Dance New Jersey. 2 RVCC offers an Associate of Fine Arts in Dance. The program focuses on the skills and concepts of dance necessary for a career in the contemporary dance world and prepares students for transfer into a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program at a four-year college or university.
