Hike to the Top of the Mountain!
‘Mountain of Hogs’ to the Lenape because of the wild pigs that foraged there, a refuge of wolves
harassing settlers in colonial times, and the site of a long gone aeronautical beacon guiding the
first cross-country Air Mail planes during the infant days of powered flight, Cushetunk Mountain
today overlooks Round Valley Reservoir and is the nesting site for bald eagles. Our hike will
take us to the summit of the mountain and along a portion of the ridge. After about a mile of
gradual elevation changes, the trail requires a strenuous 350 foot climb up the steep mountain
side through mature woodland. The rewards, however, are terrific views from the top, impressive
woods and possible bald eagle sightings. The hike time will be approximately two hours. There
are maps at the Recreational Trails tab at http://readingtontwp.org/ .
