Tallit-making class gets underway at Kehilat HaNahar
Standard by reporter November 11, 2015 No Comments
A tallit is a Jewish prayer shawl. A modern tallit can be an artistic expression.
Under the capable leadership of educator/artist Susan Rattner, a newly formed class at Kehilat HaNahar in New Hope, PA began by learning about the biblical directive and rabbinical commentary on the construction, meaning, and use of the tallit. The class practiced the very specific method of tying the tzitzit (tallit fringes) using ordinary string. The goal is for class participants to design and create their own original tallit. Specifications and designs were discussed, along with an array of artistic techniques, such as silk dying, fabric applique, and sewing embellishments.
