Wrong-Way Driver Arrested For Driving While Intoxicated
On Thursday, March 10, at approximately 1:10 am, a 2011 Volkswagon sedan operated by Samantha VanSickle, age 25, of Glen Gardner, was traveling north in the southbound lane of Route 31 near Echo Lane. At this time, a Clinton Township police officer was traveling south on Route 31 when he observed Ms. VanSickle’s vehicle driving straight at him. As the officer activated his patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and swerved onto the southbound shoulder to avoid a head-on collision, Ms. VanSickle also swerved onto the southbound shoulder before swerving back into the southbound lane at full speed. The officer then turned around and stopped Ms. VanSickle’s vehicle. During the stop, the officer determined that Ms. VanSickle was intoxicated and subsequently arrested her. Ms. VanSickle was transported to police headquarters where she refused to provide samples of her breath for chemical testing to determine the content of alcohol in her blood. The officer charged Ms. VanSickle with Driving While Intoxicated, Refusal to Submit to a Breath Test, Careless Driving, Failure to Maintain Lane, and Failure to Wear Seatbelt. She was transported to the Hunterdon Medical Center for an evaluation and her vehicle was towed and impounded.
