On Tuesday, March 22, at approximately 1:55 am, a Clinton Township officer stopped to assist a disabled 2012 Nissan Altima partially blocking the roadway on Beaver Avenue near Route 22 East. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer detected the odor of marijuana and observed marijuana residue in plain view. A search of the vehicle produced marijuana, a large quantity of unopened gift cards, credit cards, a laptop computer, and a credit card scanner. As a result, officers arrested Corey Payne, age 25, of Brooklyn, NY and charged him with Fraudulent Use of a Scanning Device, Credit Card Theft, Credit Card Fraud, Possession of Under 50 Grams of Marijuana, and Willfully Abandoning a Motor Vehicle. He was later transported to the Hunterdon County Jail in default of $20,000 bail. The United States Secret Service and the Readington Township Police Department assisted.
