Wilma L. Congdon, a lifelong resident of Hunterdon County, died peacefully at the Independence Manor residence in Flemington, NJ, on January 20, 2016. She was 96 years old. She had been under the care of Hunterdon Hospice since November.
Mrs. Congdon was born in Tewksbury Township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, on Dec. 3, 1919. She attended local schools and graduated from Somerville High School in 1937. During World War II, she worked for local companies supporting the war effort. She married Robert C. Congdon in April 1944. They lived for two years in Maryland and South Carolina while Mr. Congdon finished his service as a pilot in the Army Air Corps. They then moved back to New Jersey and lived in Tewksbury Township most of their lives until they retired and moved to Clinton.
Over the years Mrs. Congdon worked at accounting positions in Hunterdon and Somerset counties. In the 1980s she and her sister, Betty Kearney, started and operated the Outdoor Girl, a ladies apparel boutique in Bernardsville, New Jersey.
Mrs. Congdon is survived by her three children, Robert II and his wife Anne of Richmond, Virginia; Douglas and his wife Ann of Sterling, Virginia; and Timothy and his wife Frances of Pittstown, New Jersey, and five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Betty Kearney, of Clinton, New Jersey, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Congdon died in 1996.
Calling hours for friends will be at the Scarponi-Funeral Home in Lebanon, New Jersey, from 6pm to 9pm on Tuesday, Jan. 26. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at the Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Cokesbury, New Jersey, of which Mrs. Congdon was a lifelong member. Burial to follow at the Cokesbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Hunterdon Hospice, 2100 Wescott Drive, Flemington, NJ 08822.
